Staging the Beijing Olympics: Visions, Tensions, and Dreams

The spectacular preparations for the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 are designed to enhance China's presence on the world stage. They have simultaneously raised concerns about the cultural, social, economic and environmental implications of such a massive undertaking. In this workshop we will explore the potential and actual impact of the Beijing Summer Games from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

We hope to gain a better understanding of the richness and complexity of this international event, and thereby test and challenge some of the assumptions and concerns surrounding both the Beijing Olympic Games and Olympic staging in general. Topics explored will include sustainability, urban issues, the media, culture, political symbolism, city / national branding, links and comparisons with other Olympic Games, including the 2010 Vancouver-Whistler Winter Games, and the recent events concerning Tibet.
