2005-04-25 : Urban Mixer Events Calendar

Can you read me…am I coming in clear…? If this email is messed up, you can always check it out online at http://www.urbanmixer.com/newsletters and drop us a line about the problem. We’re here to serve, and we have to have something to do in the mornings when we're hungover. Here’s your Urban Mixer events calendar for Monday, April 25th, 2005, a personalized list of Vancouver’s hottest events and hippest happenings. Our secret agents are always on the prowl, digging through people's daytimers when they're not looking (sorry Paris...) for hints on what's cool in town so you can have kickass plans for a social week. Drop me a line and let me know what you think…especially if you'd be interested in finding out what's in store for the Urban Mixer and all the cool/insane stuff we're putting together down the line... If you want to be an Urban Mixer Secret Agent, be the first to send us the 411 on a wild and/or wicked happening and win an all-cotton (Raj tested, mother approved) Urban Mixer T-Shirt. Here’s a list of my personal picks for this week, links included. And remember to always surf safe! FLAME ON! In a universe of apple martinis, low carb beer and Jagermeister, it’s not easy maintaining one’s bibulous sophistication without falling back on the same things that your ancestors ordered back in the twenties. Well, I've found your answer, and it’s Flame! Flame is a new aperitif wine from Silver Sage Winery, available in (where else?) Yaletown at LilyKate Fine Foods. Serve very cold in your very finest glasses to your very best hottie and try not to essplode as waves of intense peach, apricot and hot peppers overwhelm your senses. (Okay, well just the hot peppers, actually). It can be enjoyed alone, with chocolate-dipped strawberries or seafood, or best of all with the hottie of your choice. Once you’ve both got the hots, I’m sure you can take it from there! FAST ONES Nope, this isn’t about those nerds you went to school with. This is about the many diverse creatures you can find at venerable, popular and completely respectable Hastings Park. No indeed, you wouldn’t find any Dashiell Hammett (Maltese Falcon) characters here, least of all the deeply tanned George Hamilton impersonator in the shantung suit with python loafers and cigarette holder. Nope. Nor would you find Western Canada’s best thoroughbreds tearing around a track at forty-five miles an hour with tiny little men and women aboard. Nosirree. Nor a chubby, retired horsie who calmly submits to petting, provided there are carrots in it for him. Jeez, everybody at the racetrack is jaded! And you certainly wouldn’t be able to choose between plush corporate boxes (invitation only; if you find out who to suck up to, let us know. Raj prefers the Royal Salute Corporate Box), the posh Silks Buffet where white linen, waiters and climate control pamper you, The George Royal pub, the Grandstand where you may be approximately the altitude of Burnaby Mountain but you have one heck of a view, or even leaning right on down on the railing (nothing like catching some mud as the horses thunder by. Street cred, ya know!). The track is open from nine in the morning, running races from all over the world on the large screens indoors, and live racing runs from 1:30 every Saturday and Sunday till the season ends. Kentucky Derby is May 7th, so dust off the Princess Di outfit/silk George Hamilton suit and live out your Damon Runyon fantasies. And coming up soon…a mystery competition for Urban Mixologists…all off the record, on the QT and very, very hush-hush. But you might be advised to switch from Smirnoff Ice to Bacardi 151, straight up, just for training purposes over the next few weeks. TALK TO ME, BABY! Email comments to raj@urbanmixer.com Get the very latest on the Vancouver scene by checking out our calendar of events here. Or pick and click a day of the week on the right hand side of this email (in green) to read all about that day's life options. No, it doesn't say, "Hang out on the pub patio" but you know that's always an option! You can check us out online (no, not the lavalife profile! I need to update it!) at http://www.urbanmixer.com. We live for your attention, so come on, give it up for us! Flex that finger and click it for the Urban Mixer team! Tell us about the fabulous time you had at one of our events, or tell us about an incredible upcoming event. Pictures...pictures are good, too. We'll show you ours if you'll show us yours...
